My passion is and always has been animals. Since birth, I have been surrounded by animals. My parents had a hobby farm in Scotland where they kept pigs, chickens, dogs and cats. My dad bred German Shepherds and that is how my love for dogs developed. Through the years my family added to their menagerie with a pony, a donkey and a budgie along with numerous dogs. I was always somewhat of a tom-boy and could often be found fishing for minnows, tadpoles or catching frogs in the stream that ran through our property. Our neighbouring farmer knew me well as I would often walk through the field to talk to his cows!
After moving to Canada I quickly added to my own family with Mac, our beloved Golden Retriever/German Shepherd cross. A few years later Mac was joined by Tosh, a playful Yellow Lab (Mac n Tosh!). While taking Tosh to obedience classes at Celine’s K9s in St. Catharines my passion for animal rescue was ignited. I was asked by Celine if I could foster an elderly dog that had been abandoned in an apartment when the owners moved away ...... and so it started! Since that day I have fostered and helped find loving homes for more than seventy dogs and cats. I’ve loved every moment of it. I currently share my home with my husband and our fur family; a German Shepherd and a Toller mix.
My passion for helping animals in need is well known by my friends, family and others in my networking community. This reputation has resulted in many requests for assistance from people and organizations who trust in my abilities. For instance a local social agency needed to find a temporary home for a dog whose homeless owner had been admitted to hospital. I was more than happy to help out. My vet is well aware of my love and compassion for animals and asked if I could help one of her clients by fostering her rambunctious young dog until she recovered from surgery.
I gained invaluable experience as a volunteer dog walker at the local humane society where many of the dogs were not leash trained. Before starting my business, I volunteered as a dog rescue transport driver and have transported and handled hundreds of dogs from Chihuahuas to Bloodhounds. These dogs are often under stress and need careful handling. When I am working with animals, I never think of it as work because it’s what I love doing.
